Seventeen years ago, Gerard Bonner launched a two-hour internet radio show that would go on to reshape how gospel and inspirational music reached audiences worldwide. Today, the Bonnerfide Radio Brand marks its 17th anniversary, and the milestone is more than a nostalgic nod, it’s a celebration of one of the first true gospel internet radio stations and the legacy it built across nearly three decades of gospel media innovation.
A Sound Built to Break the Mold
When Bonnerfide Radio launched in August 2009, it wasn’t just another online station. Bonner set out to raise the bar for Christian and gospel radio, blending gospel, Christian hip-hop, R&B, and jazz into a format that felt fresh, current, and unapologetically inspirational. What began as a modest two-hour daily broadcast quickly evolved into a full 24/7 internet station, with every show made available on demand through iTunes podcasts and BonnerfideRadio.com, long before “on-demand audio” became an industry standard.
From Local Show to Global Platform
The growth curve tells its own story. In its very first year, Bonnerfide Radio had already reached listeners in 46 states and 46 countries, pulling in 37,000 visits and more than 65,000 page views. That momentum never slowed. Over the years, the station expanded its footprint to all 50 U.S. states and more than 125 countries, racking up nearly 300,000 site visits, over 500,000 page views, and more than 1 million downloads of its broadcasts. That download milestone mattered for more than bragging rights, it helped put independent gospel artists on equal footing with major-label acts, giving emerging voices in gospel and Christian hip-hop a real shot at national and international exposure.
An Award-Winning Legacy
Few internet radio stations in any genre can claim the kind of recognition Bonnerfide Radio has earned:
Internet Radio Station of the Year, Crystal Mic Media Awards (2010)
Internet Radio Station of the Year, Gospel Music Worship of America (2010)
Internet Radio Station of the Year, Stellar Awards, with five consecutive nominations, making it the only internet station ever nominated for that stretch (at the time)
Christian Hip-Hop Station of the Year, Kingdom Choice Awards (2013)
Internet Radio Station of the Year, Gospel Blue MIC Association (2014)
That run of five straight Stellar Award nominations remains one of the defining achievements of the brand, a testament to consistency in an industry where internet-first platforms often struggle to sustain long-term relevance.
Roots That Run Deeper Than Radio
Bonnerfide Radio didn’t emerge out of nowhere. Gerard Bonner had already been shaping gospel media since 1997, when he co-founded Gospelflava.com, the first informational website built specifically for the gospel music industry. That platform became a go-to resource for gospel news, reviews, and artist coverage, laying the groundwork for the trust and audience Bonner would later channel into Bonnerfide Radio.
The brand hasn’t stood still since. In 2025, Bonner extended the Bonnerfide name into a new medium with the launch of the Bonnerfide Podcast Network, a joint venture with The ByrdOLogy Group under 4th and Pine Media Holdings. The network carries forward the same mission, authentic storytelling and meaningful dialogue across gospel, Christian hip-hop, R&B, and jazz, while bridging high-level leadership conversations with faith-based and cultural audiences.
A Legacy Still Being Written
Seventeen years in, the Bonnerfide Radio Brand stands as proof that a two-hour idea, built on faith and a distinct sound, can grow into a multi-award-winning, globally recognized platform. From Gospelflava’s early days to Bonnerfide Radio’s trophy case to today’s podcast network expansion, Gerard Bonner’s nearly 30-year run in gospel media is a case study in ecosystem building, one show, one artist, and one milestone at a time.
Happy 17th anniversary, Bonnerfide Radio.
