Clarence Avant didn’t just break barriers—he built doors for others to walk through. Known as “The Black Godfather,” Avant was the power broker, dealmaker, and kingmaker behind some of the biggest names in music, entertainment, and Black business. His influence spanned six decades, shaping industries and elevating generations of Black talent.

From music to film, sports to politics, Avant moved in silence but changed the game loudly. His strategic genius, fearless negotiation skills, and deep-rooted commitment to Black excellence made him one of the most influential figures in entertainment history.

A Power Player Before the Spotlight

Born in 1921 in North Carolina, Clarence Avant started in the music industry as a manager for jazz artists in the 1950s. But managing talent wasn’t enough—he wanted to control the business side.

By the 1960s, he launched Avant Garde Enterprises, securing major deals that put Black artists in positions of power. He negotiated one of the first million-dollar record deals for a Black artist (Jimmy Smith) and helped establish Black-owned labels at a time when the industry was still controlled by white executives.

Building Wealth, Influence, and Power

Clarence Avant wasn’t just about money—he was about leverage.

  • Mentored Black business leaders, including BET founder Bob Johnson, paving the way for the first Black-owned billion-dollar media company.

From music moguls to U.S. presidents, Clarence Avant advised, connected, and built opportunities for Black excellence at every level.

The Ultimate Kingmaker

Behind the scenes, Avant shaped culture and politics with his influence.

  • Guided the careers of Quincy Jones, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Jamie Foxx, and Babyface.
  • Played a key role in political fundraising for Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
  • Advocated for Black ownership in media, entertainment, and sports long before it became a mainstream conversation.

His network, wisdom, and power moves made him the man behind the deals that changed the game.
